A Brief History
of Gracie Jiu Jitsu
The Beginning- Some historians of Jiu-Jitsu say that the origins of "the gentle art" can be traced back to India, where it was practiced by Buddhist Monks.
- With the expansion of Buddhism, Jiu-Jitsu spread from Southeast Asia to China, finally arriving in Japan where it developed and gained further popularity.
- In the last days of the 19th century, some Jiu-Jitsu masters emigrated from Japan to other continents, teaching the martial arts as well as taking part in fights and competitions.
Jiu-Sool-Do is derived from a variety of arts dating back more than 4000 years. This relatively new form of martial art (est. 2003) is sure to gain worldwide recognition in the years to come. Based upon the principles of the 5 martial arts, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Hapkido, Tae Kwon Do and Kuk Sul; Jiu-Sool-Do is truly a complete martial art. Master Chris Smith holds the rank of black belt in each of these martial arts. The comprehensive yet effective techniques of Jiu-Sool-Do are sure to offer something for everyone while simultaneously providing an excellent form of self-defense and physical & mental fitness.
The Gracie family has taught the martial arts world to constantly evaluate their martial arts. To keep what works and shun ineffective methods.... this is one of the foundations of Jiu-Sool-Do. Master Chris Smith retained the most effective techniques from his repertoire of martial arts to create Jiu-Sool-Do. The supreme prowess of Gracie Jiu-jitsu ground work, the falls and throws of Judo, the joint locks of Hapkido, the devastating kicking arsenal of Tae Kwon Do and the beauty of the traditional forms of Kuk Sul. This is his gift to his students and the world... a martial art that can equally enamor a 5 year old child or a top notch professional fighter and everyone in between.
